CRABS
Otherwise known as the Hermit Crab, room 2 the only door at the end of a shadow filled corridor, a few steps away from the lobby and reception area. Russ rushed ahead and unlocked the door with some urgency to enter first. He looked around. The room was an interior room with no windows. The decoration old but clean. Two bedside tables, a modest wardrobe, a desk, chair, and a set of small drawers made up the furniture. A door on the left-hand side of the room led to the bathroom and shower. The hotel had composed the interior design of the room on a crustacean theme, with framed paintings of various crabs hung on the walls. Jack imagined the other rooms would have similar themes and wall hangings, perhaps lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, and seabirds.
âIs it OK if I take the bed that is the furthest from the door?â Said Russ as he sat on the bed furthest from the door.
âYeah, no problem. This one works for me; I can be next to the door, no problem.â Said Jack as he placed his backpack and case on the bed that remained.
âI just donât trust the people here. There is something about them. It does not feel right. Take my word, something is fishy here.â Said Russ.
âAnd not just the decor? Well, we have seen little of them yet, but I do not think they mean any harm. The receptionist was genuine enough. You just need to settle in and get on with it.â
âWell, Iâm not taking any risks. I have my personal alarm. It is going under my pillow tonight.â
Concerned so much about potential intruders, Russ pulled the chair from under the desk and toward the door. He then lent it at forty-five degrees, so its top wedged against the door to prevent it opening without effort. In addition, he bolted the door, checked that it was secure, tugged at it with some force, and undertook this sequence twice over.
âThat should keep them out.â
âI donât think thereâs any issue, but OK, there you go, hope it satisfies you that will keep them out.â
âYou will thank me, you will see. Anyway, my wife packed up some goodies just in case the food here is not appealing.â
Russ opened his bag and removed a bag of sweets, candy, biscuits, and other small snacks. He heaped them together on the table closest to the door, next to Jackâs bed.
âHelp yourself, thereâs plenty where those came from. My wifeâs good to me, she loves my smooth arms, you know.â
As he spoke, Russ rolled his shirtsleeve up to his elbow and exposed his forearm. He pointed his arm toward Jack as he rubbed it up and down with the palm of his other hand. Disturbed, Jack felt uncomfortable and backed away.
âNice and smooth. Here you go have a feel.â
âThat is fine Russ, Iâm sure your wife wouldnât want me messing around with your arms. So, I am OK. I am very OK. If you do not mind, I will use the shower first, while you are unpacking.
